What is malta flag registration?

Registering under the Malta flag means entering the vessel on the Malta register and taking on Malta as the flag state.

Registration happens in two stages. Provisional registration comes first: it is granted quickly — typically within 24–48 hours of the documents being received — and lets the vessel fly the Malta flag immediately. Permanent registration follows once tonnage measurement and the statutory surveys are complete and the full document file is in. From then on the registration is maintained by annual renewals and by keeping the vessel's certification current.

Provisional registration

Filed and typically granted within 24–48 hours; the vessel flies the Malta flag from that point.

Survey and documentation

Tonnage measurement and statutory surveys are completed and the full file assembled.

Permanent registration and renewal

Permanent registration is issued, and we run the annual renewals from then on.

Requirements

An owner eligible under Maltese law — for most international owners this means a Maltese owning company.
Clear title to the vessel and disclosure of any mortgage.
Deletion from the previous registry, if applicable.
Tonnage measurement and the statutory surveys the regime requires.
Vessel age and condition are assessed by the flag administration; older vessels may require additional inspection.
