Why Register Under the Malta Flag

Malta is an EU member state and its flag sits on the white list, so the vessel is welcomed in every major port and the flag is well received by port state control. For an owner, that translates into fewer questions on arrival and a flag that insurers, charterers and lenders already recognise.

Provisional registration can typically be obtained within 24–48 hours of the documents being received. That is what makes it possible to align registration with a closing date, or to re-flag a vessel without taking it out of service.

There is no restriction on the nationality of the owner or the crew. Most international owners register through a Maltese owning company, which is straightforward to incorporate and can be done remotely in a few days.

Malta's statutory mortgage regime is clear and creditor-friendly, which is why the flag is a common choice for financed yachts and ships. Mortgages can also be transferred onto the register as part of a change of flag.

Malta registers vessels for private use and commercially, under the Commercial Yacht Code and the Small Commercial Yacht Code. Commercial operators may also benefit from the tonnage tax regime, subject to eligibility.
