What is vessel registration?
Vessel registration is the legal act of entering a vessel on a national register, so that it acquires a nationality, a port of registry, an official number and the right to fly that country's flag.
Registration is what gives the vessel a recognised legal identity: it is the basis on which ownership is recorded, a mortgage can be secured, the vessel is admitted to ports, and the flag state assumes responsibility for its safety certification. Malta operates the largest ship register in Europe and registers pleasure and commercial vessels alike, from small craft to merchant tonnage.

How the process works
Owning structure
We confirm who will own the vessel and, where a Maltese company is used, incorporate it.
Provisional registration
We file for provisional registration so the vessel can fly the Malta flag within days.
Survey and measurement
We coordinate tonnage measurement and the statutory surveys the vessel's regime requires.
Permanent registration
We complete permanent registration and set up the renewal calendar.
Requirements
- An owner eligible to register under the Malta flag — most non-Maltese owners register through a Maltese owning company, which we set up.
- Clear title to the vessel, with any existing mortgage identified.
- Deletion from the current registry, where the vessel is already flagged elsewhere.
- Tonnage measurement and the statutory surveys applicable to the vessel's regime.

Documents you will need
- Proof of ownership — bill of sale, or the builder's certificate for a new build
- Deletion certificate from the previous registry, if the vessel is already flagged
- Passport copy and proof of address for each beneficial owner
- Company incorporation documents, where the owner is a company
- Tonnage measurement certificate, or the survey booking that will produce it
- Evidence of insurance cover
- Application forms and declarations, which we prepare and you sign
