1. Private use and commercial use are not the same question
A yacht used solely by its owner sits in a different VAT position from one operated commercially for charter, and the two are assessed under different rules — registration regime and VAT treatment are related but are not the same decision.
2. Where the boundary actually sits
The dividing line is use, not appearance: a yacht that occasionally carries paying guests is not treated the same as one that never does, and moving from one to the other changes the VAT position along with the registration regime.
3. The owning or operating company matters
VAT registration and reporting sit with a legal entity, not with the vessel itself, which is one of the reasons the ownership structure is usually settled before the vessel is registered rather than after.
4. Charter operators and VAT
An operator chartering a commercially registered yacht typically needs to register that entity for VAT on charter revenue, alongside the vessel's own commercial certification.
5. Tonnage tax is a separate question
Commercial operators may separately be assessed for tonnage tax treatment on shipping income. It is evaluated independently of VAT, against its own eligibility criteria.
6. Settle it before you register, not after
Restructuring ownership or VAT position after a vessel is already registered is generally more disruptive than settling both up front — which is why we ask about intended use before the registration file is opened.
