1. What CYC and sCYC certify
The Commercial Yacht Code, and the Small Commercial Yacht Code for yachts under 24 metres load line length, certify a pleasure-type yacht as fit to be operated commercially — carrying paying guests for reward rather than only its owner.
2. Crew requirements
Certified crew numbers and qualifications scale with the yacht's size and its intended area of operation, set out in the code applicable to the vessel.
3. Survey and safety equipment
A commercial survey covers more than a private yacht's — safety equipment, stability and structural requirements proportionate to carrying charter guests for reward.
4. Charter VAT
Operating commercially typically brings a VAT registration requirement for the operating entity, assessed on the specific charter structure.
5. Converting a private yacht to commercial
A yacht registered for pleasure use can generally move to commercial registration, but it means the survey, certification and VAT position are all reassessed against the commercial regime — it is a change of regime, not an add-on.
6. Keeping the certificate current
CYC and sCYC certification runs on its own renewal cycle alongside the vessel's other statutory certificates, and lapses like any of them if it is not renewed on time.
